AWARD SUMMARY

Entry Requirements Category 1: an AQF Level 8 award in the discipline of theology with Korean proficiency; or

Category 2: a three-year AQF Level 7 award in the discipline of theology, with Korean proficiency; or

An equivalent award.

Duration Category 1: 1 year (2 semesters) full-time or 3 years (6 semesters) part-time.

Category 2: 1.5 years (3 semesters) full-time or 4.5 years (9 semesters) part-time.

Mode Full-time, part-time.
Structure Category 1: 72 credit points (i.e. 8 units);

Category 2: 108 credit points (i.e. 12 units).

The course may be taken with or without a specialisation. A specialisation in the MA (1.5years) comprises 54 credit points in a Discipline or subdiscipline with at least two 9600-series units. If an MA – 1 year, the Grad Cert entry award units could be used towards the 54 credit points required for the specialization

The MA has nested within it the Graduate Certificate in Arts and the Graduate Diploma of Arts:

  • GradCertArts requires 36 credit points
  • GradDipArts requires 72 credit points

English Proficiency Satisfactory completion of at least one year study of English as a subject in high school or in an English-only language school or other training centre, or

Satisfactory completion of a test approved by the SCD that demonstrates that the candidate can

  • Speak English: understands and answers (often incorrectly) basic questions in English, is able to speak using several very short sentences using very simple vocabulary about everyday issue. Spoken English can be understood by the listener for about 50% of the time.
  • Write English: writes a few ideas in a few sentences using simple vocabulary, simple structures, occasionally attempting paragraphing (with limited success); limited grasp of punctuation and spelling. Writing generally lacks coherence.
  • Read English: reads aloud text in English that was chosen and prepared by the candidate. Recounts aspects of the text and explains meanings of selected words.

Graduate Profile and Rationale

The Master of Arts (Korean) course is designed for two categories of candidates:

1. those who hold a tertiary qualification in a non-theological discipline, who seek a graduate-level education in theology comparable in depth to the Bachelor of Theology (Korean), including a deeper biblical and theological understanding, spiritual formation, and cultural literacy that will prepare them for ordained or other ministry in church, parachurch or non-profit organizations, and other vocational settings.

2. those who hold a tertiary qualification in a theological discipline who wish to pursue a graduate qualification in theology as part of their continuing education for ministry.

Outcomes

Graduates will have specialised knowledge and skills for research, and/or professional practice and/or further learning and the ability to apply such knowledge and skills in a theologically-related area, as they acquire:

Knowledge

  • an integrated understanding of an advanced body of knowledge in one or more theologically related disciplines or areas of practice, including recent developments in the theological disciplines and/or their practice
  • understanding of research principles and methods applicable to these theological disciplines and their practice

Skills

expert, specialized cognitive and technical skills in a theologically-related body of knowledge, so that they are able independently to:

  • analyse critically, reflect on and synthesize complex information, problems, concepts and theories associated with a theologically-related body of knowledge
  • research and apply established theories to a theologically-related body of knowledge or practice
  • interpret and transmit knowledge, skills and ideas through coherent and sustained argument to specialist and non-specialist audiences in relation to a theologically-related body of knowledge

Applications of Knowledge and Skills

the ability to

  • apply knowledge and skills in a way that demonstrates autonomy, expert judgment, adaptability, and accountability as a practitioner and/or learner in relation to the inter-dependent building up of the church and good of the wider community.
  • plan and execute a research-based project, and/or piece of scholarship in an area of theology.

ACADEMIC REGULATIONS for the Master of Arts (Korean)

1 Admission to Candidature
1.1 Applicants for admission to candidature for a degree of Master of Arts will be classified into one of two categories:
1.1.1 those who have completed an AQF Level 8 award in the discipline of theology, with Korean proficiency, or equivalent award (Category 1); or
1.1.2 those who have completed a three-year AQF Level 7 award in the discipline of theology, with Korean proficiency, or equivalent award (Category 2).
1.1.2.1 Applicants in Category 1 will be required to complete 72 credit points (eight units).
1.1.2.2 Applicants in Category 2 will be required to complete 108 credit points (twelve units).
1.2 Applicants who hold a Vocational Graduate Diploma (VET accredited) or a hold a Vocational Graduate Certificate (VET accredited) may be granted provisional admission.
1.3 Notwithstanding the provisions of this regulation the Student Administration Committee may require an applicant to demonstrate fitness for admission as a candidate for a degree of Master by carrying out such work and/or sitting for such examinations as the Student Administration Committee may determine.
1.4 In exceptional cases an applicant may be admitted as a candidate for a degree of Master if the applicant submits evidence of other academic and professional attainments to the Student Administration Committee.
1.5 A candidate for the award shall be designated as full-time or part-time. A student is designated as a full-time if enrolled in three units (27 credit points) or more in a semester or part-time if enrolled in less than three units (27 credit points) per semester.
1.6 No candidate for the award may be concurrently enrolled in any other undergraduate or postgraduate course within the Sydney College of Divinity or any other tertiary institution, unless approval has been granted by the Academic Board.
1.7 Proven fluency in the Korean language: Korean as first language or, for non-native-Korean speakers, Korean proficiency: level 6 out of 6 levels in the Yonsei University Korean Language Test.
1.8 Some proficiency in the English language:
1.8.1 Satisfactory completion of at least one year study of English as a subject in high school or in an English-only language school or other training centre, or
1.8.2 Satisfactory completion of a post-school award of at least 6 months duration where teaching was in English, or
1.8.3 Satisfactory completion of a test approved by the SCD that demonstrates that the candidate can

1.9 Application for enrolment in the Master of Arts (Korean) program is made to the Registrar SCD Korean Program.
2 Course Structure 과정의 구조
2.1 The Master of Arts (Korean) degree requires candidates to complete credit points as follows:
2.1.1 Those in Category 1 are required to complete 72 credit points in units whose content is not similar to those covered in their previous studies;
2.1.2 Those in Category 2 are required to complete 108 credit points in units whose content is not similar to those covered in their previous studies
2.2 The course may be taken with or without a specialisation. A specialisation in the MA (Korean) (1.5 years) comprises 54 credit points in a Discipline or Sub-discipline with at least two 9600 series units. If an MA – 1 year, the Grad Cert entry award units could be used towards the 54credit points required for the specialisation.
2.3 Every program for the award must contain at least 9 credit points in Theological English.
2.4 All course units shall normally be taken from 8500 and 9600 series units in the
2.5 A candidate may take a maximum of 36 credit points in units listed as Generic (Research) units in the Schedule of Units of Study with a maximum of 18 credit points in Independent Guided Study units, 18 credit points in Research Project units, and 18 credit points as a Research Essay. Students who transfer from the MA (Korean) to either the MDiv (Korean) or the MTh (Korean) cannot exceed this limit in total across both programs.
2.6 A candidate may include 18 credit points in the Research Project (10,000-12,000 words in length and written in the area of specialisation under supervision) providing the candidate completes a 8500 series Research Methodology Unit (9 cr pts) before or concurrently with the Research Project.
2.7 A candidate whose admission or provisional admission has been granted on the basis of a Vocational Graduate Diploma or Graduate Certificate must complete the unit A8501 Critical Thinking and Writing during the first enrolment period.
2.8 Candidates wishing to proceed to the degree of Master of Philosophy must include one 18 credit point research unit at Distinction level.
2.9 Every course unit requires students to demonstrate mastery of basic English-language vocabulary and comprehension of English-language passages related to that unit before enrolling in further units. All course units shall be taken from the Sydney College of Divinity Schedule of Units of Study.
3 Period of Candidature
3.1 The period of candidature for the degree shall normally be:
3.1.1 Category 1: 1 year (2 semesters) full-time, or up to 3 years (6 semesters) part-time.
3.1.2 Category 2: 1.5 years (3 semesters) full-time, or up to 4.5 years (9 semesters) part-time.
3.2 In certain circumstances the Student Administration Committee may grant extensions to the period of candidature.
4 Leave of Absence
4.1 The Student Administration Committee may grant leave of absence from the award. The period of leave shall not be counted as part of the period of candidature for the degree.
4.2 The period of leave shall normally be one semester after which a candidate may apply for a further period of one semester or will be required to complete candidature.
5 Assessment 평가
5.1 The assessment of course units shall be conducted in Korean in the manner approved by the Academic Board in line with the College’s established guidelines for assessment packages.
5.2 Students may be required by the Academic Board to present themselves for oral examination.
5.3 Academic and non-academic misconduct will be penalised in accordance with the regulations of the Sydney College of Divinity, whose stipulations are severe.
6 Credit
6.1 A candidate may seek credit up to a maximum of 54 credit points in the Master of Arts (Korean). Credit can be granted only from units at graduate level where the outcomes, content, demand hours and assessment are equivalent to that of units in the SCD award.
7 Saving Clause
7.1 Notwithstanding anything to the contrary contained herein, the Academic Board of the Sydney College of Divinity may, in any case in which it may deem it appropriate to do so, vary, dispense with or suspend any requirement or prescription by these regulations, and report forthwith to the Council of the Sydney College of Divinity.
